Jaded

June 8th, 2010

Ive been really busy over the last few months with my degree, I probably could have kept blogging and maybe I should but whenever I thought about writing my blog it felt like I was cheating on my degree, is that insane? Probably. Anyway I’ve got lots to talk about and won’t try to do it all in one post, if you were Reading about my experiences of my son being born I’ll get on it as soon as I can.

Anyway to start with a few weeks back I read a story about 2 lesbian girls being supported by their school to attend their prom as a couple. When i read this i thought to myself “why is this news?” A school is accepting and supportive of it’s students as it should be big deal. I’m not sure what this says about me as a person if anything at all to be honest. Then I started thinking, it is a big deal to them and it’s a big deal to society to. Acceptance isn’t a given, it should be but unfortunately a lot of intolerance exists. My expectation that a story about 2 lesbian girls at school would end badly shows how jaded I have become to news of this nature. My initial reaction was that it wasn’t news worthy because it was good news and not bad news.

A story a week or so later was more what I have come to expect from the media. It was supporting a young girl who had refused to cover her head on a school trip to a mosque. Her school (a catholic school at that) berated her for such a display of disrespect. The newspaper however flipped this story on it’s head to make the school look bad for forcing her to do something against her will. The punchline of course being that it was all faked and that no such event took place. The young girl and her mother banked on the fact that the newspaper love stories of intolerance and would lap this up.

Message basically reads that he world can be a nasty intolerant prejudiced hell hole and because I expect this the good news stories don’t feel like news. We need to ensure more good news gets through to break up some of the grim reality

New exercise DVD

February 4th, 2010

Last night I was laid on the living room floor on my back. When I do this Ruby likes to climb on like I am a piece of playground equipment. We started playing a game which involved Ruby standing on my chest then diving superman style over my head at which point I catch her, lower her slowly to the ground over my head the pick her back up and stand her on my chest again. This was repeated over and over and over again, today my triceps are screaming.

This made me think about other games I could create that would be fun
for a toddler and beneficial for me as a workout. The idea then
continued as being a great DVD aimed at parents who have little time
to go to a gym but could do these exercises while playing with their
kids, of course I understand that just taking part in play activities
with your kids is exercise but the idea was to isolate muscle groups
to make it more effective.

Then my Brain went a step further and thought about possible
implications of the whole idea being inappropriate and potentially
having a backlash against it.

I tell you what, that was a busy 5 minutes on the train this morning I
was rich and famous for a brief period but hey ho.

Who’s game?!?

While hanging the washing out on the line this afternoon my mind took to wandering as it so very often does.

Jen thinks I don’t think about the future, this is not true I just think about it differently to her. Today when I was thinking about the future my mind turned to our as yet unborn child. Here is the point at which me and Jen differ. Jen would probably consider the childs looks (will they look like me or her) personality etc. My brain found me wondering “if they are into video games, will there be a noticeable switch from them borrowing my games, to me borrowing theirs and what kinda games will they like?

While this may seem (especially to Jen) a stupid and pointless thing to wonder I think it deals with the question about the childs personality. Maybe I’m just clutching at straws, nevermind.

Whatever happens in Vegas…..

August 6th, 2009

….. Is hopefully legal in the UK!!!

My friends got married in Vegas while on their 2 month trip across the states. I know I’ve already tweeted this and put something on facebook but I just wanted to blog about it too and I don’t give an impotent wallabys flacid penis if you want to read this particular post or not cos this ones for me!!!

The wedding was filmed and the uploaded to a website so I got to watch it actually happen which was really cool and a truly unique experience for me. Then came tech fail in the form of an attempted video conference between the happy couple and friends and family. It appears popularity is a curse when on a shared net connection in a hotel. They made Skype calls to us all individually and it was cool to chat with them now that they is all hitched N wotnot. It has made me think about my wedding when I eventually have it, guess I’d best propose at some point eh.

How dare you

June 30th, 2009

I think everybody has somebody in their life in some way that they aren’t that fond of but put up with for the sake of family politics. You know the kind of person who you basically disagree with on almost every single point through no fault of your own it is their pomposity that causes it…?

… Don’t you hate it when that person is right about something. Even something really minor. It’s bad enough that they are right in the first place but for you to then be publicly put in a position where you have to agree with them because to do otherwise would make you look ridiculous!!! How dare they put you in that position. I swear they do it on purpose too, just to rattle you, they are very devious indeed.

PIN stands for Personal Identification Number but i find most people call it a PIN Number. This means they are unwittingly replicating the word Number.

I have no idea why this matters in any way but it seemed to while writing. Anyway, to prevent this replication it should be referred to as merely a PIN without the word Number on the end.

The only other possible solution i can think of is if people really want to say the word “Number” it should be called a PI Number. This leaving us with a dilemma because surely any four digit PI Number should be 3142 (without the decimal point anyway) which would make things easier for villains at least.

59, 10 Then what

REG
I first wondered about this aproximately 5 or 6 years ago in one day while showering and have run it past a few people before but it occured to me again today so i will share this thought with you.

The current car registration system is flawed and will have run for less than 10 years as opposed to the last two systems which ran for around 20 years each. Currently UK car reg’s are numbered 09 and the august plate puts a 5 in place of the zero meaning the next few registration’s would look like this:

  • 09
  • 59
  • 10
  • 50
  • 11
  • 51
  • 12
  • 52 etc etc etc

Obviously this will not work because it will replicate previous years registrations. Somebody suggested to me once when i tried to explain it that maybe they would put the 5 in the other digits place. Ok let’s try that:

  • 09
  • 59
  • 10
  • 50
  • 11
  • 15
  • 12
  • 15
  • 13
  • 15

It doesn’t work. The only thing i could think is maybe they will use a 6 instead of a 5 until that no longer works then use a 7 etc and i don’t know why but that idea just seems a bit crap.

Now maybe the answer is really simple, maybe i’m over looking a very basic concept and somebody can point that out to me. But if not, i figured this out five years ago, do the DVLA know?

Virtual Movie Rentals

June 17th, 2009

Do you have weekend at Bernie's 2
Recently I resubscribed to LoveFilm the postal DVD rental company. Love their service it’s so easy and so totally something that would not have worked with video. Anyways it got me to thinking about renting movies over the net and more specifically through my XBOX.

Netflix ,from what i can make out at least, seems to be pretty much exactly the same as LoveFilm ie. postal rentals in the US but in addition to this they also stream movies through the XBOX 360 (and a couple other devices) to Netflix Customers. Fantastic, but only available to US residents (I’m sure there is however a dodgy workaround of course).

The pricing of Movie rentals on the XBOX 360 in the UK isn’t hideous, it’s a little more than Sky Box Office for newer movies (just over £4) and for older movies can be as little as £2 for standard definition. But if i can get 3 movies a month for my current Lovefilm subscription of £5.87 why would i bother. The basic point I’m making is that rentals through XBOX is a great idea, it’s immediate, straight on to your TV without scratches on the disk but they need to bring the prices down. For example if all movies were £2 I’d be likely to jack in my Lovefilm subscription in favour and probably so would a lot of other people as it makes more sense, or perhaps take up the netflix model with a UK based company.

One last thing. Ditch Microsoft points and just use cash amounts for XBOX content, it;s annoying, hell tie it up to paypal that’d be better than points. Just a suggestion.

Mouth Breathers

June 7th, 2009

Beware

When i was a kid a mouth breather (see above if confused) was not a rarity but certainly not common place. I remember there being one in my year and as far as i can remember possibly 1 per every other year in the school.

They are on the rise

On my travels i have noticed mouth breathers everywhere, they are even starting to group. I don’t know if it is somekind of base instinct like salmon swimming up stream to lay their eggs in the place they were born or what, but they do seem to travel in packs these days. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying their is anything inherently evil about these slack jawed dumb looking individuals, i just think we should be more careful is all. Why should we be more careful, well, again i’m not trying to be a fear monger but it occurs to me that there cannot be a huge leap from the above picture to this.
Don't say i didn't warn you

Left Handed

May 31st, 2009

Kack handed Frigger

In my last post i mentioned that my girlfriend and I are having a baby. Obviously this makes you think about all sorts. Girl or Boy, What will we call them, what will they look like, What kind of person they will be when they grow up etc etc but one I’ve been thinking about is Will they be left handed like me!!! Well i kinda hope they are, i mean yes i sometimes have issues living in a right handed world but they are becoming increasingly few and far between. I’ve always considered myself a little unique (i do realise i am not the only lefty in the world) because I’m sure nobody else in my family is.

Obviously the baby and i will have a bond anyway, but i think them being left handed would just make that bond a little stronger.
